Rehabilitation of a Water Supply Network in a City in Idleb Governorate – Phase I

In 2011, approximately 85% of the population in Syria had access to safe drinking water; this figure has declined to 40% since the Syrian crisis began. In addition, water quality is deteriorating and water supply diminishing.

In the selected city and adjacent areas, the water supply has been heavily affected by the conflict due to the electric power being cut off and the water infrastructure – which is used for both water extraction(via pumps) and water distribution (via a piping network) – deteriorating. The entire system, which was designed to serve 126,000 inhabitants, consists of four pump stations. One of these pump stations is supplying approximately 30 villages through recently established piping networks.

In this phase of the project, one pump station will be rehabilitated to ensure that potable water services are almost fully recovered in the project area, sustainable access to safe drinking water is increased, and the living conditions of the population improve. This phase of the project involves the following works for rehabilitation of the selected pump station:

• supplying and installing 12 water pumps;
• supplying and installing two dosing pumps for water sterilization;
• supplying two generators; and,
• increasing the capacity of the selected IE.

When the first phase of this project is successfully implemented, 56,000 people in the project area will benefit. At least 126,000 people will benefit from the successful completion of both phases of this project. Specific project objectives are to:

• increase rate of access to safe drinking water from 60% to 80% for 56,000 people;
• improve health and sanitary conditions by providing a consistent water supply of no less than 60 liters per capita per day; and,
• decrease water costs to an affordable level (3% of household income, per UN standards).
